All of the media’s attention again seems to be on Elon Musk and Grimes’ newborn baby boy.
Specifically, the internet doesn’t seem to agree on how the baby’s name is to be pronounced or what the different characters in the name are supposed to mean. Elon Musk announced on May 4 that his son’s name is going to be ‘X Æ A-12,’ but has since changed it to ‘X Æ A-Xii.’
Why the change? Many speculate that this may be because of Californian laws, which don’t permit the use of numbers, Roman numerals and other symbols as names. Hence, ‘Æ’ and ‘12’ are likely to cause the name to be rejected.
That wasn’t the case though. ‘Æ’ was accepted and the change from A-12 to A-Xii, which represents the Roman numeral ‘XII,’ solved the issue of using numbers in the name. Hyphens are also allowed by the law so that wasn’t a problem.
Grimes did not provide further details about the name change. She did indicate that she was pleased with the new name though, replying in a tweet, “Roman numerals. Looks better tbh.”
However, Musk elaborated further on this topic in a Joe Rogan podcast episode he appeared on early in May. He mentioned that his girlfriend, Grimes, is the one who “mostly came up with the name.” The ‘X’ and ‘A-12’ in the name are pronounced as they are, the ‘Æ’ is pronounced as ‘Ash.’ Therefore, the name is ‘Ex Ash A Twelve.’ But this is just one among the tons of ideas floating around on the internet.
Musk said that he came up with the ‘A-12’ part. A-12 is the short form for Archangel 12, the plane that came before SR-71, which he said was the “coolest plane ever.” Apparently, it’s also Musk and Grimes’ favorite airplane.
The change was announced on Musk’s Twitter the day after the baby was born, along with a picture of him holding his son. The next day, Grimes explained that ‘Æ’ is the Elven spelling of AI, or artificial intelligence. She also talked about the aircraft A-12, saying that it was the “precursor to SR-17” (which Musk later corrected to SR-71). ‘Archangel’ is her favorite song, another reason why they chose to put A-12 in the name.
