During the holiday weekend, a new software update, firmware 2020.48.25, was implemented. The update consisted of some visual upgrades, new games, and a boombox feature.

According to Road Show, the boombox feature or “Boombox mode” allows drivers to add a sound after the horn and add audio to exterior speakers. You can change the sound to whatever you want and five extra sounds using a USB key.

In the Tesla release, they detail when you can use it and how you can use it.

“Turn your car into a boombox and entertain a crowd with your media play when parked. You can also customize the sound that your car makes when you press the horn, drive the car or when your car is moving with Summon. Select an option from the dropdown menu or insert your own USB device and save up to five custom sounds.”

In true Elon Musk fashion, he had a few suggestions:

Before being put to use, a warning on the screen pops up saying, “please check local laws before use in public spaces.” This warning prevents Tesla from being responsible for someone playing a sound that could distress the public.

Road Show points out that Boombox mode could become annoying to everyone but the driver. In my opinion, drivers are responsible for Boombox mode. If using Boombox mode can potentially put the driver in a bad situation then it is best not to use it.

Elon Musk has been pushing the idea of more video games in Tesla models as autonomous driving slowly ramps up self-driving is an option, what’s left for drivers to do other than keeping their hands on the wheel?

Some of the new games include The Battle of Polytopia, Cat Quest, and Kabal (Solitaire).

The visual upgrades include a better view of what is around the car. Other features on the screen have been moved to allow better access. Some of those include the backup camera and wipers being moved to the bottom bar, indicator lights have been placed on the side, and the speed of Autopilot, Autopilot availability, and detected speed limit is paired with the driving speed.

With the latest updates, features are more accessible and bring out our inner child. Introducing more entertainment options will give owners more time to spend with the passengers while the car in driving autonomously. The videogames would also be a fun feature when robotaxi’s are available.
