And a recent revelation from Elon Musk only confirmed this further.

Previously, Tesla claimed that its Roadster is capable of reaching 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds, which would make it one of the fastest cars to date. However, Musk recently said that SpaceX’s cold-gas thrusters, situated behind the car’s license plate, will be used to increase its speed to a whopping 0-60 mph in 1.1 seconds.

If you don’t believe the claim that the Roadster could potentially be the fastest car in the world, you can look to the YouTube channel Engineering Explained for evidence. Jason Fenske, the host of the channel, uses the existing data about the Roadster and the principles of physics to conclude that the vehicle will have a weight of around 2000 kgs (or 4400 pounds), resulting in the g-force (or acceleration) of around 1.44 G’s. When you add the SpaceX package of cold-air thrusters to the equation, the gravitational force comes to 2.5 G’s- about the same as Musk’s estimates.

The acceleration can then be used to derive the speed, as velocity is equal to time multiplied by acceleration. This result is also in line with the company’s prediction of 0-60 mph in 1.1 seconds.

If the SpaceX thrusters are indeed capable of providing the Roadster with this acceleration, it will become the fastest car on the planet, overtaking the current fastest models by a significant margin.

According to Autocar, the fastest cars in the world right now are the Ultima Evolution Coupé and Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, both of which can reach the speed of 0-60 mph in 2.3 seconds. The fastest electric car, however, is the Japanese sports car Aspark Owl which can reach 0-60 mph in 1.7 seconds.

If Tesla manages to pull this off, it will become another Elon Musk company to hold a record to its name. The first one is SpaceX, which became the first private company to launch humans into space.

Musk is, of course, confident that this can be done: “We’re going to do things with the new Roadster that are kind of unfair to other cars. [It’s] crushingly good relative to the next best gasoline sports car.”

Rocket Thrusters On a Roadster? A Recap On the Latest Jay Leno’s Garage https://themuskette.com/rocket-thrusters-on-a-roadster-a-recap-on-the-latest-jay-lenos-garage/ https://themuskette.com/rocket-thrusters-on-a-roadster-a-recap-on-the-latest-jay-lenos-garage/#respond Fri, 29 May 2020 00:00:37 +0000 https://muskette.com/?p=1391 Elon Musk and Jay Leno meet once again in an episode of Jay Leno’s Garage, which aired on Wednesday night. For those who have or have not watched it, here is a recap on what happened.

In the beginning of the episode, Jay Leno meets Elon Musk at Hawthorne California, Tesla’s Headquarters. After Elon arrives in a red Tesla Semi, Jay Leno asks him how he would convince drivers that the Semi is better than what they already have. Elon explains that the Semi is way cheaper to operate and that if you are going cross country, the cost per mile is fundamental. Elon also adds that the cost of electricity will be less than half of the cost of diesel. Tesla estimates a saving of $200,000 in fuel costs over 1 million miles. Another reason Elon gives is that the Semi is fun to drive and that it has the acceleration of a sports car. The Tesla Semi, hauling 80,000 pounds, can go 0-60 mph in 20 seconds, while a standard diesel truck needs a full minute.

Jay Leno then moves on from the Semi to his Tesla collection. In a brief summary, the Model S is still the highest selling luxury car and still has the fastest 0-60 mph of any car in America, the Model 3 has the highest satisfaction ratings in consumer reports of any car, the Model X with the awesome Falcon Wing doors, the Model Y, which Tesla has started shipping out despite what Elon Musk said in the episode (due to the episode airing date), is the SUV version of the Model 3, and the Tesla Roadster.

In true Elon Musk fashion, he tells Jay Leno that you can have the option of putting a rocket thruster, from SpaceX, on the back of the Tesla Roadster. Like the rest of us, Jay Leno exclaims, “See, I don’t know when you are kidding or when you’re not.” Elon responds: “No, in this case I am serious”. Leno asks how that is going to work, so Elon explains that the thrusters will run on ultra-high pressure compressed air and that the thruster will be behind the license plate and it will drop down when the thruster is being used and will go 0-60 in 1.9 seconds. This might be the closest to a Bat-Mobile we have seen yet.

They then bring out the Cybertruck. Jay Leno points out that truck buyers are very conservative in what they like and that this does not look anything like a pick up truck. Senior Design Executive, Franz Von Holzhausen, explains that he thinks there is a preconceived notion of what a pickup truck should look like and that if they wanted to make something bold then they would have to break that norm. The Vault that covers the bed of the truck can roll open and close with the touch of a button. Leno asks how strong it is, Holshausen says that you can walk on it. That is when Elon climbs on the truck and stands up on the Vault.

They then take a drive in the Cybertruck, Jay Leno points out that it is not different from driving any other Tesla. The Cybertruck can go 0-60 mph in less than 2.9 seconds with 500+ miles of range and the truck is available in a single, double, and tri-motor. Elon explained that there will be changes made, but since then he has decided not to change the design. So what you see is what you’re getting. The glass is Tesla armored glass constructed with 30X cold-rolled stainless steel and the door panels of the car are a 300 Series stainless steel, making the doors bullet proof.

They drive to the SpaceX headquarters, which is where the Boring Company Tunnel starts. The tunnel is a mile and a half long. Elon then suggests that they could take the Cybertruck into the tunnel. Surprising, the truck was able to fit. The tunnel height is 14 ft and averages between 50 – 60 ft underground. Normally, a Tesla would be on Autopilot while driving through the tunnel. When the both of them reached the end of the tunnel, the Cybertruck had to fit in the elevator which would bring them up to the surface. The Cybertruck barely fit on the platform due to how big it is but the truck was able to make it to the top and back on the road.

The episode was fascinating to watch, from the composition of the Tesla Semi to Jay driving the Cybertruck into the tunnel. I am excited to see the Semi and the Cybertruck on the road.

A Stunning New Teaser Brings Tesla’s Next-Generation Roadster to Life https://themuskette.com/a-stunning-new-teaser-brings-teslas-next-generation-roadster-to-life/ https://themuskette.com/a-stunning-new-teaser-brings-teslas-next-generation-roadster-to-life/#respond Sat, 22 Dec 2018 16:46:02 +0000 https://muskette.com/?p=916 The next-generation Tesla Roadster may still have not entered the production but it brings fascination and is drawing the attention of auto-enthusiasts all around the world. The reason for this huge interest in this car is because of its possibility to deliver “a hardcore smackdown” to cars powered by gas, as stated by Elon Musk.

Just by taking a look at Roadster’s specs, it’s already apparent that this car is made to stand out of the norm. It has three electric motors and is capable of sprinting from 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds, while accelerating all the way to its top speed of more than 250 mph. The vehicle has a rather large 200 kWh battery pack which gives it a range of 620 miles per charge. Not many gas-powered cars can even compare to this all-electric supercar.

The Yazuki, a Tesla enthusiast, presented the next-generation Roadster in a teaser which disrupted the supercar industry. The teaser was uploaded on a sharing website Vimeo and the Roadster’s spec likened the vehicle to light because it is powerful and can break through barriers. In the teaser you can see several impressive shots of the Roadster, all of them bringing the attention to its futuristic design.

The real reason for the next-gen Roadster’s disruption is because of its features and price point. Considering that it’s created by Tesla, the vehicle has all the company’s advanced, such as Autopilot and a special mode that optimizes that car for 0-60 launches. What makes all of this really amazing as well is that Tesla is offering to set the starting price for all this performance for $200,000. However, when it comes to more expensive versions, such as the rocket tech-equipped dubbed as “SpaceX package”, are to be released later on.

With $200,000 as starting price, the vehicle will enter the marker at much lower cost than mid-tier supercars such as McLaren 720S and the Ferrari 812 Superfast, both which prices are close to the ~$300,000 range. When it comes to performance, though, the next-gen Roadster meets or even goes over the standards of halo vehicles like the McLaren P1, Ferrari LaFerrari, and the Porsche 918 Spyder – all of which have earned their place in the class of the elite hypercar category.

The next-gen Roadster has already started to have its effect on the supercar market. For example, Christian von Koenigsegg gives credits to the Roadster for making his company to create its best vehicle so far. Professional driver Emile Bouret, who took it for a test drive during its unveiling, described the new vehicle as a game-changer – one that introduce us to the new era of high-performance automobiles.

“I love that I live in a world where all these cars exist. You have Koenigseggs and Paganis and Ferraris and Lamborghinis and McLarens and Porsches and Rimacs and Teslas. So, I know there’s a lot of hate out there, but I just don’t understand it. If you’re a car person, wouldn’t you root for everybody? I’m definitely rooting for them because the world will be a better place if that car does get built and it gets on the road because other people are gonna build cars to beat it — and we’re gonna win,” he said.
